KORBA (CHHATTISGARH): reduced power supply after a damaged fly ash dam in Korba

KORBA (CHHATTISGARH): For nearly a month, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa are coping with reduced power supply after a damaged fly ash dam in Korba grounded power generation at four units of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC). In the first week of September, as torrential rains pelted down, the heaps of ash at Dhanras acquired the force of floods, cracking the spillway wall. The pond water overflowed and contaminated nearby paddy fields. The company was forced to stop fly ash disposal to prevent more spillage. With no alternative site for ash disposal, production in four units came to a grinding halt. For the first time in three decades, production at NTPC's Korba station has dipped to just 200MW.

NTPC set to have regional office in Raipur

National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has cleared the deck for setting up a new regional office in Raipur.

Senior officials of the company informed the state government that the process had started and the new regional office would be set up soon in Raipur, a top official with the state's energy department said.

The proposal was in the pipeline after Chairman-cum-Managing Director of NTPC Arup Roy Choudhury gave his consent to set up new regional office in Raipur during a meeting with Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh in October last year.

The state government had agreed to provide land in the Naya Raipur area the proposed new capital of Chhattisgarh.

NTPC, the largest power producing company, is developing a coal mine in Raigarh district besides a proposed 4000-Mw power project near Lara in the same district of Chhattisgarh. In Madhya Pradesh, the company had announced to come up with two power projects.

The 2600-Mw Korba power project in Chhattisgarh produces power at the cheapest rate. The NTPC is coming up with 2960-Mw power project in Sipat of Bilaspur district in the state. The two units of 500-Mw each had already started production while the three units of 660-Mw each were under construction.

NTPC adds 500 MW unit in Korba Chhattisgarh

The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC)largest power producer in India has added a 500 MW coal-fired unit at Korba in Chhattisgarh, a company statement said Friday.

'The new 500-MW unit of NTPC's Korba super thermal power station in Chhattisgarh has been synchronised with the grid,' the statement said.

The Korba project of NTPC, based some 240 km north of capital Raipur, already has three units of 200 MW each in Stage-I and three units of 500 MW each in Stage-II.

NTPC is also setting up a 4,000 MW thermal plant in Chhattisgarh's Lara village in the coal-rich Raigarh district. The project will have five 800 MW units to be built with ultra super critical technology.
